An organizational environment consists of internal and external constituents that impact an organization’s productivity and decisions. The external environment consists of all those outside elements that are not within a company’s direct control but have an influence on the goals and achievements of the organization. Internal factors of a company’s environment include factors that are internally managed by an institution. These are easier to regulate and manipulate to attain the desired environment that is conducive to optimum results. This interprets to multiple benefits for the company, such as goals achieved on time, a committed workforce with a good work ethic, strong financial turnaround, all of which combined lead to a happy and satisfied clientele.

These internal environment factors include human, financial, technological, and material resources, organizational practices and policies, and organizational culture among other things.

On to the boring. Shall we?

One of the most essential things an organization can have which influences the internal environment is the leadership and management styles. The benefits of good leadership are manifest: high morale of the workforce, high employee retention, and long-term success. A good leader holds clear communication with their employees and as a consequence, the employees know what is expected of them, they are briefed on the company’s visions and targets and they feel like an important member who is contributing something meaningful towards the growth of the company. When the company’s objectives are clear, employees work better as teams with coherent, harmonious, and congruous actions.

Factors that shape Internal Organizational Environment

Culture plays a vital role in the internal environment of an organization. It is based on the presupposition of an existing system of values and beliefs and common conduct rules that unite members of an organization. The internal organizational culture has lasting impacts on a variety of things, including but not limited to: organization’s strategy for success; attitudes towards different subgroups within the organization.

The strengths and weaknesses of a company are also a part of the internal environment because that is what largely determines a company’s success. The owners and the managers must be willing to ask the hard questions and face the ugly realities. There should be an objective analysis of what is working for the company, what is halting its progress.

Company policies and procedures influence the performance of its employees. If an employee knows that they are compensated well for the work they are providing, they are self-motivated to put their maximum energies into performing the best. Unsatisfied employees are not invested in the work. Workers who perceive higher levels of control at work report feeling satisfied, motivated, and committed to their work. Absenteeism and workplace conflicts go down. Employee efficiency is further increased when a portion of an organization’s power and responsibility is shared with them by their superiors — the satisfaction of knowing that the work they are contributing is impactful is a strong motivator in itself.

A motivated and dedicated workforce, strong leadership, healthy organizational culture, and a company with its values clearly defined are key factors to success. This leads to a happy customer base because with a coherent system working, the end product or service that customers get is meaningful, valuable, and high in quality. This turns into a positive cycle that reinforces good work ethic and company values, which in turn produces high-quality results and a better financial turnaround for the organization.

The secret …

We know all the described components of an organization’s internal environment are important, but all these would mainly assist you in business development and retaining the existing client base. The secret ingredient to our recipe for landing new clients is WORKPLACE. Workplace represents the physical environment in which the business operates. It is much more important than we acknowledge. The way your physical workspace looks matters a lot when trying to attract new clients to your business. Is it comfortable for the employees? Are the work conditions good enough to encourage the best performance?

If you are a company that deals with remote clients, some of the ways they get to know you are through a virtual tour or a meeting with your team. When they see that the workplace looks professional, while allowing room for creativity, they are more likely to consider working with you. The reason for this is simple. A workplace that is designed for the ease of the employees assures the clients that since the employees are cared for, the services they provide will be much better than what they would get elsewhere.

Imagine you required some services, and you had two options before you. The first office you visited was dimly lit and messy, while the second one was tidy, well-kept, and well-organized. Both service providers provide the service with the same technical expertise and for the same price. Which would you choose? The latter one, obviously.

Thus, if you have a physical workspace that inspires, it positively impacts potential clients. It paints a bright picture of why a beautiful, friendly and comfortable workplace is crucial for an organization’s growth. This is something that the owners and leaders of an organization should take seriously and strive to improve.
